Why pools turn green — and why it's not your fault

A green pool almost always comes down to algae getting the upper hand. It happens to the best of us. Here are the most common culprits.

Chlorine dropped too low

Even a day or two without adequate sanitiser gives algae the window it needs. Heat accelerates this dramatically.

UV and summer heat

Auckland's hot summers burn through chlorine fast. What held in spring might not be enough come January.

You were away

Two weeks' holiday, no one watching the pool, and suddenly you're home to a swamp. It happens to loads of our customers.

Chemistry imbalance

pH that's drifted too high can neutralise chlorine completely, making your pool a perfect algae breeding ground even if you've been dosing.

How we get your pool back from green to clean

Every green pool recovery follows a clear, methodical process. Here's exactly what we do — and why.

1

Assessment & diagnosis

We start by testing your water to understand exactly what we're dealing with — chlorine level, pH, alkalinity, and the severity of the algae bloom. This tells us what treatment is needed and how long it'll take. No guesswork, no blanket treatment.

2

Shock treatment

We apply a heavy-dose shock treatment — super-chlorination — to kill off the algae bloom. This is the most critical step and needs to be done correctly to be effective. We use the right product at the right dose for your pool size and water chemistry.

3

Vacuum & clean

Once the algae is dead, we vacuum out the remains from the floor and walls. This is physical work — a green pool recovery isn't a quick flick of a brush. We're thorough because leaving dead algae behind just feeds the next bloom.

4

Full chemistry balance

We retest everything and bring your water into perfect balance — pH, chlorine, alkalinity, stabiliser. Your pool needs to be in the right range before we leave, not just "close enough." This step is what prevents the green from coming back quickly.

5

Follow-up check

Depending on the severity, we'll either check in the next day or give you clear instructions on what to monitor. For severe cases, a follow-up visit ensures everything is holding. We won't just leave you hoping for the best.

Flat-rate pricing — no nasty surprises when you're already stressed

Before & after — what the process looks like

Here's what our customers typically experience coming into and out of a green pool recovery.

Before we arrive

The situation

Green or murky water — maybe you can't see the bottom. Possibly a smell. Equipment may still be running but not making any difference. You're not sure if the pool is salvageable. You feel like you've let it go too far.

You haven't. We've seen pools that looked like pea soup come back beautifully.

After we leave

The result

Clear water, balanced chemistry, clean walls and floor. A full summary of what was done and what your chemistry readings are now. Clear advice on how to keep it that way, or an invitation to discuss a regular maintenance plan so this doesn't happen again.

Most pools are swimmable again within 24–48 hours of treatment.

Green pool recovery — your questions answered

We guarantee a response within 48 hours — and in most cases we can be there same day or next day. Call us on 09 570 4440 and we'll tell you exactly when we can get there. Don't wait on this one — the longer a green pool sits, the harder (and more expensive) it becomes to treat.
In almost all cases, yes — the pool can be treated without draining. Draining a pool is expensive, risks the shell floating if the water table is high, and usually isn't necessary. We'll assess honestly when we arrive and only recommend draining if it's truly the only option.
For most recoveries, the pool is swimmable within 24–48 hours of our treatment. We'll test the water before we leave and give you a clear timeframe based on the readings. Safety first — we won't tell you it's ready until it actually is.
Most commonly, the pH has drifted high — which essentially neutralises your chlorine, making it useless even though it's there. This is why chemistry balance matters, not just chlorine dosing. When we recover your pool, we'll explain exactly what happened and how to prevent it.
Not if we can help it. After a recovery, we'll walk you through what went wrong and what to monitor. Many customers choose to move to a regular Pool Pals maintenance plan at this point — which keeps the chemistry stable and means we catch any drifts before they become green pool situations.
We quote a flat rate before we start, and that's what you pay. The quote covers labour, chemicals, and the follow-up check. The only variable is severity — a mild green pool costs less than a severe one — and we'll assess that honestly over the phone or when we arrive before any work begins.
